The chief parts of the central processing unit are the arithmetic and logical unit (ALU) and the control unit. ![]() Often called simply the CPU, it is also known as the central processor or the main frame. It manipulates the data in accordance with the program instructions and exercises control of the entire computation process and of the interaction between the units of the computer.
